Tomorrow Is Mine

Alex Pereira and Ida Lorenz

Episode Summary

Over the holiday break we're looking back over some of the more fascinating conversations featured in this series with two student stories highlighted in each episode. These bite sized snapshots are a bit like your favourite holiday photos – a reminder of a memorable moment and a chance to revisit that experience again. The fifth Summer Snap features features two high achievers from totally different cultures who share very similar personal characteristics. Both admit that they are always looking towards their next project, unable to enjoy the present, because their hunger to continually succeed never really allows them to feel satisfied. They also share a preoccupation with being in charge, carrying the burden of responsibility while constantly worrying about where things could go wrong or how they could improve their working environment and as such struggle to switch off, relax or savour their successes despite their exceptional achievements. The first is Alex Pereira, a former top tier football player, coach, manager and player’s agent who later became a successful businessman before deciding to turn his life upside down by leaving Brazil to undertake a Masters in Sports Management at Bond University on the Gold Coast. While studying at Bond Alex took the entrepreneurial initiative to create a professional Beach Tennis circuit in Australia, which was given a huge boost this week with a series of exhibition matches at the Australian Tennis Open. Later this year there will be a national circuit with tournaments in NSW, Queensland and Western Australia. Like Alex, Ida Lorenz is a compulsive achiever who sets the bar of expectation incredibly high - to the point where no matter what she did or achieved, nothing ever really satisfied. The Danish student came to Griffith University to study an MBA, immersing herself in every opportunity she could, including running a number of social clubs on campus. For all the world Ida appeared to be living the idyllic student life through her overly active social channels, but internally the anxiety was eating away at her as she struggled with a multitude of commitments and the pressure of her exams until finally she took steps to regain the balance in her life.
